The concept: a ROM is just a binary blob. Definition files are what tell RomRaider 'at this address lives the Primary Ignition table, sized 16 by 16, in these units.' No definitions, no readable tables — so setup order matters.
Step 1 — Install RomRaider (it's Java-based, so install a current Java runtime first). Launch it once so it creates its settings folders.
Step 2 — Get definitions: the community-maintained ECU definition packs cover essentially every EJ-era CAL ID. Download the current definition set, point RomRaider at it in Settings, and restart. Definitions are versioned and updated — note which version you're using in your tuning notes.
Step 3 — Open your STOCK ROM backup (never your only copy — work on a duplicate file). If definitions match, RomRaider greets you with the table tree: fueling, ignition timing, boost control, limits (rev/speed/boost cut), sensor scaling, idle, and more.
Step 4 — Learn to read a 3D table: columns are usually engine load, rows are RPM, cells are the value (degrees of timing, target lambda, target boost). Click through Primary Open Loop Fueling and the ignition tables just to SEE how the factory shaped them — the stock calibration is a masterclass in conservative engineering.
Step 5 — Understand the two-map reality of Subaru ECUs: many tables exist in high-detonation and low-detonation pairs, and the ECU blends between them based on the knock history you'll learn to log. Editing one without understanding the pair is a classic beginner trap.
Step 6 — Practice the workflow without tuning anything: change one obviously-safe display value, save-as under a new filename, close, reopen, confirm the change persisted, then delete the file. You've now round-tripped the editor. The actual first edits worth making are the next guide.
Step 7 — Bookmark the RomRaider forum and the table documentation for your generation. The community has documented what nearly every table does — tuning blind when the answers are written down is a choice.
Tuning changes engine behavior. Numbers here are typical, not guaranteed — your fuel, climate, and hardware matter, and a professional calibration for your specific car always beats a generic map.
